Last year I made myself a beautiful one from a vintage-looking Santa cabochon and thought I would like to make a similar one as a competition prize but couldn't source the same type of cabochon so ended up making my own, although mine is not a vintage style. While I was stitching it I took some photos so that I could show you how it is done. If you'd like to recreate it you can either source a cabochon from somewhere, get one from my <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/BeadyNotions">Etsy supplies store</a> or make your own like I did. If you would like the tutorial as a PDF file you can get it as a free download from my <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/other/santa-christmas-ornament/116989?fresh=true&NAVIGATION_PAGE_CONTEXT_ATTR=PATTERN">Craftsy store</a>.<br />

<br />
My Dad and Kieran have been in there the last few weeks sorting out the sill on the door and getting everything ready to do the walls. Last week they built the framework for the plasterboard and got that in on one wall, complete with plasterboard on the bottom half. The top half can't be done yet because the electrics need sorting out there first, and the window needed replacing. My Dad has been down today fitting the new window, Here is what it looks like now:<br />
<br />

On the opposite side of the space it is still quite full of all the usual junk you would expect to find in a garage, although a lot of it has now been moved into the shed out the back. I can;t wait to get everything moved in there so I have a real space to work in instead of just sitting on the sofa surrounded by boxes of beads.<br />
<br />
This year I seem to be making more polymer clay cabochons than jewellery but that has come to a sudden halt with the new addition to our family, Orion. He is a 4 year old black cat who was abandoned as a tiny kitten and had to be hand reared. He ended up with the daughter of the woman who found him, who then had to give him up when her young daughter developed an allergy to him. So far we have kept him indoors but I'm hoping he will be able to go out soon. He is still a little skittish and will have to have a visit to the V-E-T before we can feel safe letting him outside.<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
Hopefully the studio will be finished in the not-too-distant future. :o)Donna Sandershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05488511836919526199noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3722520798364392839.post-43404715086066910502014-05-26T12:40:00.002+01:002014-05-26T12:40:36.330+01:00May Goddess and the Bead RetreatMay is always the month that I organise our annual Bead Retreat so I wanted my Goddess for this month to be about that. This year we stayed at Endmoor Farm for the the whole week and it was lots of fun! Sitting round a huge kitchen table beading with some of my best friends is always guaranteed to make me smile and this time was no exception. <br />
<br />
For my Goddess, I started out by making her a scenic cabochon from polymer clay featuring a little sheep to represent the farm where we stayed (there were lambs being born while we were there and running round the farmyard). Her face was made in blue and white for the sky. I used lots of white beads with a little bit of sparkle and a flat backed crystal to represent the fun we all had. There are 14 multi-coloured fp crystals at the bottom, one for each of us that stayed. She is a happy little Goddess because I was happy while I stitched her. :o)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
The week before we went out there I also made another Goddess. It was my friend's birthday on the Sunday and I wanted to make her a present so came up with the idea of doing a Goddess with flowers and bees as she likes bees. I love the Springtime feel to this one and I think she liked it too. :o)<br />

<br />
April is the month that we lost my Nanna, then a year later, my Grandad so it always reminds me of them. It is also the time that lots of daffodils are about - the flowers my Nanna always used to buy me for Easter. With such a lot of connections to them how could my April Goddess be anything other than a tribute to my Nanna? The daffodil connection is obvious. I finished her quite early on but decided it would be unfair not to give her a companion as my Grandparents were pretty inseparable. He has a lovely colourful heart as my Grandad was a painter and decorator and used lots of colour. The black and white cabochon represents the humbugs he always used to eat, the poppy is for his army service and the star because that's what he was - and is.<br />

The first half of the month wasn't memorable at all although I did make some progress with getting out of the house a few times. Then, around the end of the second week, we found out that Steven was going to have to leave home for work on short notice to cover for the manager of another pub who was off sick. This other pub is around a 2 hour drive from our house so if he isn't finishing till gone midnight and has to be back there for 9am the day after he really can't get home in between. He was away for 4 days the first week, 5 last week and that looks like continuing for the foreseeable future. It has made me feel very much on the edge and I have struggled a bit with it. I couldn't see what to bead to express myself and kept putting off starting on it. Then yesterday, Mother's Day here in the UK, everything changed. Kieran bought me the most beautiful little planter filled with bright pink cyclamen and a painted box frame full of really pretty butterflies made from beautifully patterned paper - all picked out and paid for by himself. It made my day!<br />
<br />
The Goddess that grew from my newly discovered good mood is pretty and happy and feminine. Born out of the love between mother and son.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made the cabochon for her belly from a photograph of the cyclamen for my present so I will always have a reminder of them. The heart is a clear AB one - light and bright - and has a lacy edging. She has a flower embellishment on her head to represent the cyclamen flowers, and the butterflies are a reference to the picture part of my present.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I asked if my friend wanted them all to be realistic looking but she said not so I've given some of them a real fantasy look with odd coloured eyes and lips and I've added crystals to a few too. I am having lots of fun with these at the minute although I am missing my beads.Donna Sandershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05488511836919526199noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3722520798364392839.post-82013393018652738902014-03-04T14:01:00.000+00:002014-03-04T14:01:13.426+00:00Embellished Face CabochonsI've been working on something new lately and have just got the first few finished. A friend asked me if I could make her some polymer clay face cabochons, but turned to the side instead of straight on. I found a mould that had a face in profile and, when it came, I made one face but realised it would be too big and the wrong shape for what I needed so I adapted it and cured it, then made my own mould from two-part silicone.<br />
<br />
Using my mould gives me a basic shape to work with and from there I embellish the face with all sorts of small bits and pieces to give it character, then cut around the edges and cure it in the oven. Once cooled, the details are painted on and allowed to dry, then they are varnished on the front to give them some protection and keep all the colours nice.<br />
<br />
What do you think?<br />

Each one takes around 3 hours to make so they are quite time consuming but worth the effort. These ones are destined for my friend but hopefully I will be selling some through my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/BeadyNotions?ref=si_shop">Etsy</a> store soon. If you have any ideas for decoration/themes please let me know. If I get enough suggestions before the end of next week (15 March) I will do a draw and the winner will get their idea made up for them.Donna Sandershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05488511836919526199noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3722520798364392839.post-33203306833744619692014-02-28T09:00:00.000+00:002014-02-28T09:00:03.729+00:00Little Bits of WhimsyBack in October last year I was busily making new things for a couple of fairs I'd got coming up and found some pretty metal badges in my stash that I had once bought in error as they were listed as cabochons. I'd used a few of them in bead embroidery before and decided that they would be quick to make up into pretty necklaces. <br />
<br />
They are all done in the same way but embellished slightly differently. The birdcages have simple flower beads to echo the flowers on the picture.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4VCMa_BNEwh-g77F6G5lkEL2s-eVJ-_s5_5m_TWYpREjYcWk4eREeYEarshLJLh74l2iwHbSfyTbCPdLUNEt_hLsEKmDpReyLjxwRaVLIvs_wWftb1BE1JQzzn-Gno2rUGUqdxm83VimZ/s1600/DSCF6317.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4VCMa_BNEwh-g77F6G5lkEL2s-eVJ-_s5_5m_TWYpREjYcWk4eREeYEarshLJLh74l2iwHbSfyTbCPdLUNEt_hLsEKmDpReyLjxwRaVLIvs_wWftb1BE1JQzzn-Gno2rUGUqdxm83VimZ/s1600/DSCF6317.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
These cute bird ones I left plain.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxiAh8X3rVXzS2pxrzoxfAua9QOl_HhHqyNQaxBpplpguvwQG_DicYx3osdKqLmhhM1UCQza7_uPg561kWH66IfUmhuzxq0EsF198hKkGXzFjVehI_7a5tN1Om6tPQ1hzJzkuAFXOJ4ckb/s1600/DSCF6319.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxiAh8X3rVXzS2pxrzoxfAua9QOl_HhHqyNQaxBpplpguvwQG_DicYx3osdKqLmhhM1UCQza7_uPg561kWH66IfUmhuzxq0EsF198hKkGXzFjVehI_7a5tN1Om6tPQ1hzJzkuAFXOJ4ckb/s1600/DSCF6319.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And the hearts I turned into heart shapes with the addition of some fire polished crystals.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ2n3JSTt8HIpdkhvlThI3QPBVs4uJ3bK55-Hug-bE4wK3018lSJSswAP0LPww4GlnEPjpjk9cdfqw-lTvq-Vno6qGb-Cdqr9as-OjLdSP1iZ6INbAUVkvprQWh-rez8vflF2knBmS2JOU/s1600/DSCF6322.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ2n3JSTt8HIpdkhvlThI3QPBVs4uJ3bK55-Hug-bE4wK3018lSJSswAP0LPww4GlnEPjpjk9cdfqw-lTvq-Vno6qGb-Cdqr9as-OjLdSP1iZ6INbAUVkvprQWh-rez8vflF2knBmS2JOU/s1600/DSCF6322.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I added a ribbon in place of a chain to keep the 'pretty' theme going and make them easy to wear at different lengths. Because they are metal blanks instead of glass cabochons they are really light so don't need anything more substantial. I think they are perfect for the Summer and shall be making myself one or two soon. I still have some of these in my Etsy store if you'd like one too. :o)Donna Sandershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05488511836919526199noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3722520798364392839.post-27714699658884739392014-02-27T09:00:00.000+00:002014-02-27T09:00:00.611+00:00Eastern Treasure Earrings<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've just finished these earrings this week as my entry into the Operation Tackle That Bead Stash monthly challenge. The colours for February were red, black and metallic gold and when I found the beautiful crystal components in my stash while I was looking for something else last week, I knew they would be perfect.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYbMb35QteFJUZB9yf2KqJgpMQcovY62vTYyLQzfj1gqux3JQR8FW0cK2WyT93ds9tmtIkP99xuVEsrDMomiZYMgGyX82NXQ2K_BypxpOhloTMI5HIn0o0lywRB_VIXfl9RlyVgbJOM-Ri/s1600/DSCF7341.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYbMb35QteFJUZB9yf2KqJgpMQcovY62vTYyLQzfj1gqux3JQR8FW0cK2WyT93ds9tmtIkP99xuVEsrDMomiZYMgGyX82NXQ2K_BypxpOhloTMI5HIn0o0lywRB_VIXfl9RlyVgbJOM-Ri/s1600/DSCF7341.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I stitched the components down onto the backing and beaded a row of gold right around the edge then added a couple of fire polished crystals and more seed beads in the other colours. I finished the embroidery off with an ultrasuede backing and added a loop to the top for the earwire. I had to wait over the weekend for some more crystals and daggers to arrive so that I could bead the fringe along the bottom edge as, unbelievable as it seems, I didn't have black daggers in my stash! :oO I know. Shocking, right? Luckily the postie brought them to me just as I was finishing the edging on Salacia, Queen of the Ocean so I sat right down and got them done as well. All in all a productive day.Donna Sandershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05488511836919526199noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3722520798364392839.post-51847620561200020732014-02-26T09:00:00.000+00:002014-02-26T09:00:00.474+00:00Salacia, Queen of the Ocean<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Searching through my bead stash the other day I found a lovely mother of pearl disc bead that inspired a sea-theme for my next Goddess. The disc became her belly and I found a mother of pearl heart and a pale blue swirly polymer clay face to go with it. Along with some tiny shells, a paua shell disc bead, a couple of freshwater pearls and some stick coral I created 'Salacia'.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5udc5TZ5fwrLJAT8eWq9qu7FYawgZrmcRM3vwP-QhKikNZS5xC6Q7Tb-u2ewkJsmVjrXm913GgTSMGlfuh3riNe3YudqRxbzlbpjfzbmATskYSz1gHX6mn6goqQj3tWNQ1Au5O4NkZuQZ/s1600/Salacia,+Queen+of+the+Ocean.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5udc5TZ5fwrLJAT8eWq9qu7FYawgZrmcRM3vwP-QhKikNZS5xC6Q7Tb-u2ewkJsmVjrXm913GgTSMGlfuh3riNe3YudqRxbzlbpjfzbmATskYSz1gHX6mn6goqQj3tWNQ1Au5O4NkZuQZ/s1600/Salacia,+Queen+of+the+Ocean.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Salacia was the wife of Neptune, God of the sea in Roman mythology. My version is finished with swirls of blue and silver seed beads and some twisty 'seaweed' strands.Donna Sandershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05488511836919526199noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3722520798364392839.post-53675749124551493692014-02-25T09:00:00.000+00:002014-02-25T09:00:03.627+00:00Freeform Bud VaseLast Summer on a visit to Ikea I discovered some very cute little bud vases and thought they would be great for beadwork. I bought one in each colour and, inspired by my friend, Nancy, decided to break out of my comfort zone and try some freeform RAW.<br />
<br />
I picked this vase to work on first as it is my favourite colour to use and I have LOTS of beads in my stash to match it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiquxzVbKo2MNP7uh-aHy5PjLQ46G6lBKYIG-47aNWAUt-HUWpRivu5lybr7a1hvMS8tY2cRD__rLLEWqR5HXaIM7L-dIxTYJfuOeynVAJ8LwU7RQsdLECbn9gdFSBNgNjlgz4ayFx-AtOe/s1600/1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiquxzVbKo2MNP7uh-aHy5PjLQ46G6lBKYIG-47aNWAUt-HUWpRivu5lybr7a1hvMS8tY2cRD__rLLEWqR5HXaIM7L-dIxTYJfuOeynVAJ8LwU7RQsdLECbn9gdFSBNgNjlgz4ayFx-AtOe/s1600/1.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Firstly, I had to mix a 'soup' to work with. Anyone that knows me well knows that that was a major challenge! I hate anything that is not ordered and neat. Soup is a mix of bead shapes, sizes and colours so totally freaks me out. I added lots of different sized seed beads, some glass pearls, fire polished crystals, bugles, gemstone chips and gemstone beads and ended up with this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidTgu_eNyPLoNnLnvgr-lZeqceRvHewj1yaoov2o-0xgvcJ6jJ14vzEVuNf9svsVvRKW9EyLIljUv50dI9AN8kic0r3jXhA02bwv9nlDHMg-lwb8yIl2o1bC-7Ba4Nhi5xXQZNy5F03ykH/s1600/3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidTgu_eNyPLoNnLnvgr-lZeqceRvHewj1yaoov2o-0xgvcJ6jJ14vzEVuNf9svsVvRKW9EyLIljUv50dI9AN8kic0r3jXhA02bwv9nlDHMg-lwb8yIl2o1bC-7Ba4Nhi5xXQZNy5F03ykH/s1600/3.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div>
To add the beads I needed a base row that wouldn't move so used the bumpy bit of the vase and created a ring of beads above it, then strung some more beads to add a ring below it too. Working between the two rings gave me a great start.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9kkaxDBK2aPJ6xLfzfGWSp2U8DIUzJWIqyTdJin2LMlMyATkdmYut_EEaoa4Mnoz7It72OBV4bQWQtmZw1CZ2hKsqQDsWiGnvmKlLDktH41PBEYffsTb7nDq_mFSodheX7fQe0aowInoS/s1600/5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9kkaxDBK2aPJ6xLfzfGWSp2U8DIUzJWIqyTdJin2LMlMyATkdmYut_EEaoa4Mnoz7It72OBV4bQWQtmZw1CZ2hKsqQDsWiGnvmKlLDktH41PBEYffsTb7nDq_mFSodheX7fQe0aowInoS/s1600/5.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I kept adding beads until it was covered, then started to work my way up towards the rim of the vase.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSffMuwfC-ms_CUB3UMdtpJxDhJn4nOqfZ42y2oFd6avzBNmYYxDjMR48573CApfft-TKbZRIYruYyD8c6tNtMhVDc6-oHxm1cga9zrhHXneny5fN7U_XpEOmh3Gnrvn2txWPINIK0N5Qk/s1600/7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSffMuwfC-ms_CUB3UMdtpJxDhJn4nOqfZ42y2oFd6avzBNmYYxDjMR48573CApfft-TKbZRIYruYyD8c6tNtMhVDc6-oHxm1cga9zrhHXneny5fN7U_XpEOmh3Gnrvn2txWPINIK0N5Qk/s1600/7.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHck3dF1vLFB_ZTNMBZy7HBdta4_c-_zObfB_lWzK1rDXevQOCucorS29kujnT3luvkydHVif64bWyzgayeLPlFPqH_rgiwMBvy0qsbNFUpWzajpUvpfZ1Utn_szTv3GoUCMn2PGBEcCeM/s1600/8.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHck3dF1vLFB_ZTNMBZy7HBdta4_c-_zObfB_lWzK1rDXevQOCucorS29kujnT3luvkydHVif64bWyzgayeLPlFPqH_rgiwMBvy0qsbNFUpWzajpUvpfZ1Utn_szTv3GoUCMn2PGBEcCeM/s1600/8.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div>
When I reached the top I drew the beads in over the edge using peyote stitch to stop the beadwork from slipping down the vase.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUeIyzkRmJ99gD7akpkMD_IrxsOXPkd9Yg0KhJCG12txrlwnOCMUHzvCWcFN2JmLoob9PtgBrFjDfeSXuFKs3DJJE1TzWf2ZMxvKks8gE9rnuHQuZOlO8eYPr6ZTTyXPejGnDNwTox4yLC/s1600/12.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUeIyzkRmJ99gD7akpkMD_IrxsOXPkd9Yg0KhJCG12txrlwnOCMUHzvCWcFN2JmLoob9PtgBrFjDfeSXuFKs3DJJE1TzWf2ZMxvKks8gE9rnuHQuZOlO8eYPr6ZTTyXPejGnDNwTox4yLC/s1600/12.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I then worked my way down to the bottom edge of the vase, adding in a bezelled signature cabochon which I'd just come up with as a way of identifying my work.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1qVfKUbdNNEkEzUiAAMcp9oPbacZNVEp91K6jP8Ain9N7dRSKWVAfKDAs7f4_NebwQSpWYyx_oCJHzQCl0YKGGEoQjpDbC_EBtoXfm172-HP00Kpt2l0XX-NqL0N9jtrcgbNtFOBnZhEx/s1600/DSCF4635.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1qVfKUbdNNEkEzUiAAMcp9oPbacZNVEp91K6jP8Ain9N7dRSKWVAfKDAs7f4_NebwQSpWYyx_oCJHzQCl0YKGGEoQjpDbC_EBtoXfm172-HP00Kpt2l0XX-NqL0N9jtrcgbNtFOBnZhEx/s1600/DSCF4635.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Again I worked over the edge to keep the beadwork in place.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYj0pK9JrTSWIQqEDPiW7Ui8RFYwRCyHuiwHphHjC6gUR-82OkHAGaN0SKoUU640heaD51TlIFpSD7XP3kO_fPgypSTjLSKCDR9aehUBbL3xpI0eIw0f9Ml-nV3ggJjesNCZzFWvx-pWqA/s1600/DSCF4639.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYj0pK9JrTSWIQqEDPiW7Ui8RFYwRCyHuiwHphHjC6gUR-82OkHAGaN0SKoUU640heaD51TlIFpSD7XP3kO_fPgypSTjLSKCDR9aehUBbL3xpI0eIw0f9Ml-nV3ggJjesNCZzFWvx-pWqA/s1600/DSCF4639.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I was really pleased with how this turned out! :oD</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It is destined for my bathroom once I get my new suite put in and I still have a few more colours and shapes of these vases to play with.</div>

<br />
This is the brooch I made in memory of my Nanna yet. It took me over 3 years to finally get the design and construction right but I am finally happy with it. Her name was Lillian so I though a lily would be appropriate but had terrible trouble getting first the shapes of the petals right, then the colour. In the end I was saved by participating in Pam Kirk's <a href="http://pamspoppy.com/">1914-2014 Memorial Wreath Project</a>. I bought the tutorial from Pam and found that I could use the same technique that she had used for the poppy brooch to construct the lily. I emailed Pam and asked her if she would mind as I wanted to create a tutorial for it and she very kindly gave me permission. My tutorial is now in my Etsy store with proceeds going to my Nanna's favourite charity.<br />

<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">'Space Nebula' did not turn out at all how I thought she would.
I made the cabochon using a digital image I purchased and a clear glass blank and again added eyelashes to the polymer clay face to define her eyes. I stitched her on pink backing with the intention of using bright pink
beads but instead ended up using matte purple ones with a
sprinkling of metallic silver and some fire polished crystals to represent stars and galaxies. I stitched the beads in spirals to add to this effect. Although you can see the backing in some places I think maybe this adds depth to her so I am trying not to get too upset about it.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">... an all white Goddess. The weather while I was stitching her had turned particularly cold and we'd even been
having a few snow showers so this one is called 'Winter'. She has a
rivoli for her belly which I bezelled and stitched down, then added more beads and turned it into a snowflake. The short
bugle beads that wrap around her face and swirl down her side represent ice and the two baby spike beads just below her face are icicles. I had great fun stitching her and finding all the white/crystal beads that I used. Although I am wondering if I should be worried that none of the Goddesses I have stitched so far have required me to buy any beads! ;o)</span><o:p></o:p></div>

<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">Why 'Blackberry'? Because that's what she said to me while I was stitching her. She is finished very simply with one of my polymer clay cabochons and just
a few lines of beads and a couple of flowers for embellishments. I added eyelashes to her face purely because the clay I used was so dark that you couldn't really see her features and I felt that the eyelashes would define her eyes. I really like the clean lines of the beading round the cabochon and especially the bit round that green bead right at the bottom.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

I haven't included them in my BJP folder but thought you might like to see some of those too so I shall be posting them in between my BJP pieces. I find them incredibly peaceful, both in the stitching and to look at once they are finished and can see me making lots more throughout the year.<br />
<br />
'Butterfly' was stitched immediately after I finished my January Goddess and I made her with the intention of hanging her in my bedroom. The butterfly on her belly is a small lace applique piece that has been beaded over and has a few sparkly crystals added. I had to figure out a way to bezel a 3mm chaton for this which was a bit of a challenge but I like a challenge! ;o) The colours are very 'me' and I am really pleased with how she turned out. I used different stitches/patterns for each section to create visual interest and lots of different textures and her face is made from polymer clay using a push mould so that I could get just the right colours that I needed to match the beads.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCVOYFdbs8osUxQ6CKaPkxx60DF6eG3lkOY2kNxCVehz_LPkOZarV1c3sWsfkv9l1TQgXGTUQp2_BerGyTQfVeO_FDDuZndpAvSBaQQsmvE8iNaxjnn-Nx6_CkBDX2yupdDsctQ9aRXb20/s1600/Butterfly+Goddess.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCVOYFdbs8osUxQ6CKaPkxx60DF6eG3lkOY2kNxCVehz_LPkOZarV1c3sWsfkv9l1TQgXGTUQp2_BerGyTQfVeO_FDDuZndpAvSBaQQsmvE8iNaxjnn-Nx6_CkBDX2yupdDsctQ9aRXb20/s1600/Butterfly+Goddess.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
For those of you mad enough to want to to bezel a 3mm chaton here is how I did it:<br />
<br />
Pick up 10 size 15 seed beads. Go through all 15 again, and the first one a third time and pull into a circle.<br />
<br />
Work one row of peyote using Delica beads, place the chaton in the centre, pointed side down.<br />
<br />
Work 1 row of peyote using size 15 seed beads. Go through all five 15s again, keeping a tight tension to pull this last row in over the edge of the chaton to keep it in place. Finish off the thread ends.<br />

Unfortunately so far it has been a month full of continuing frustration so I chose to use lots of red and orange beads to signify this. The frustration is caused by a number of things. My panic attacks, of course, but a huge chunk of it is to do with Steven's job. He is assistant manager at a local pub but the last few months have been spent with him doing the majority of the work without getting any recognition of the fact that he is spending so many more hours there than he is getting paid for. His contract states that he should do 48 hours but he has been averaging 15.5 more each week. One week he did 76!!! As you can imagine, it is putting an extra strain on our family life that we could well do without and no amount of complaining about it will make it right. It would be a different matter if he got paid for the extra hours but, as he is on a management contract, he doesn't. It is just expected.<br />
<br />
This Goddess really lived up to her theme too with me undoing enough of the beadwork for me to start to worry about the backing holding up! Fortunately it did or I fear she would have been consigned to the bin. The eye cabochon is from Liz Reed at <a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/TheCrimsonMoon">TheCrimsonMoon</a> and is me keeping an eye on his hours, represented by the two opaque red beads that are like the hands of a clock around the eye. The heart has white 'lace' edging for Valentine's Day (had to include it somewhere) and the pink/yellow beads are to signify the clashes we have had over it all. The black spots are, well, black spots and dark times and the crystal on her cheek is perhaps a tear.<br />

I found that having both the finished jewellery and the tutorials/supplies in one place was getting a little confusing for me, and probably for customers too, so the solution was to split them. <a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/BeadyNotions?ref=si_shop">Beady Notions by Delicate Sparkles</a> was opened before Christmas and I am slowly adding all the tutorials, kits, cabochons etc to it. I hope this will make it much easier for people to find what they are looking for and make it simpler for me to keep track of too. I am hoping to have a few new tutorials listed soon along with some new polymer clay cabochons. <br />
<br />
I spent a few happy hours playing with the polymer clay yesterday and coming up with what I hope will be some new styles of face cabochons. I need to make some to use in my BJP goddesses and none of the molds that I have were quite right so I made a couple using the mold and then re-shaped them and adjusted the features to try and get something more suitable. There are a couple of them that I really like and I am planning to make my own molds from them so that I can easily reproduce them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
These are the basic cabochons, fresh from the oven yesterday. I will probably have another play with these tomorrow while I have the house to myself. It's Steven's day off today so it's likely that nothing will get done. <br />

Due to certain events/situations in my personal life over the last few years, the panic attacks that I have suffered with for years have got much worse to the point where I am often unable to leave the house for weeks at a time. The bad situations are all behind us now but the panic attacks remain and I need to find a way to deal with them again. This is my first step.<br />
<br />
The idea behind the BJP is that you choose a shape or theme and then stick with it, making one piece each month. I am using a simple goddess shape and bead embroidery for mine which I hope to eventually turn into some sort of calendar to hang on my studio wall. It will hopefully be a reminder of how far I have come from this first piece.<br />
<br />
I always find January such a depressing month. It is dark and dreary and all the twinkly lights from Christmas have been put away. I thought that this would mean my January goddess would also be dark and dreary but in the end she turned out to have a bit of sparkle too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTa-hrP6atq3ER70XQ7wlCKpHM3js-lb63L1G-Ta6sJa37c57EuOLMQbsw7L3bzvkBQwWccU4prwhndCmT-9bhsFIY1rs5Vju873prFtvPj8MnRh5IFDLwnWt-bQigKefnklbmA9tvvuY1/s1600/BJP+January+2014.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTa-hrP6atq3ER70XQ7wlCKpHM3js-lb63L1G-Ta6sJa37c57EuOLMQbsw7L3bzvkBQwWccU4prwhndCmT-9bhsFIY1rs5Vju873prFtvPj8MnRh5IFDLwnWt-bQigKefnklbmA9tvvuY1/s1600/BJP+January+2014.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
To start, I picked out a pale pink gemstone bead for her face and a mottled grey gemstone bead for her belly. I found a pretty little hematite heart that was gifted me with a bag full of beads from a friend a little while ago and decided to use that as it was small and dark just like my mood. I edged the heart in dark red seed beads and added a line of baby spikes down one side to represent my prickliness. Originally she was to be faceless but I decided that was maybe a little creepy and decided to give her a mask instead as I often feel that I am hiding behind one myself. The mask is simply a piece of blank ultrasuede edged with seed beads and stitched over her face. The swirling seed beads are a representation of my changing moods and the crystals, the points of brightness in my days.<br />

Overall, although the description makes her sound depressing, I rather like her. She has an optimism about her that I didn't expect and I am looking forward to seeing where the remaining 11 take me.Donna Sandershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05488511836919526199noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3722520798364392839.post-47060085785400213392013-03-07T12:01:00.000+00:002013-03-07T12:01:28.559+00:00Time To Put On Your Big Girl Panties!How often, when there is something you don't want to have to do, does someone tell you to 'put on your big girl panties and get on with it'? At the start of this week I had a few conversations where it came up and suddenly I had an image in my mind of a beaded pair of panties. Strange what gives us inspiration, isn't it?<br />
<br />
I sat down to come up with a basic design and started beading. I ended up with these two fun brooches:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_w8fzpPnIUQyRXC2ld319Rrl63SehzHwpDHDhIwfq3LXh15UlGMfrdAmD72vPucOOdm8viyhtL3XixCF55pSuppCaI2UiiFT3KqNksDHq2nqPONGus2695ZnYRQalt5X84129rRvZi6-I/s1600/DSCF3172.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_w8fzpPnIUQyRXC2ld319Rrl63SehzHwpDHDhIwfq3LXh15UlGMfrdAmD72vPucOOdm8viyhtL3XixCF55pSuppCaI2UiiFT3KqNksDHq2nqPONGus2695ZnYRQalt5X84129rRvZi6-I/s320/DSCF3172.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
They are bead embroidered with a picot edging to represent a frilly/lacy edge. The leg/waist holes I beaded in a matte, slightly darker colour to make the front stand out more<br />
When I posted them on FB in the beading groups I am a member of they got a great response so I offered to post the template online. I also had people saying I should do bras, skimpy knickers, boxer shorts etc... so I did. They are not beaded yet but I have the templates all done and ready to go. Here they are:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHTFlTqVCA3Tgk_cU1PI53XqkXz15bpCxdUEMGgfllgjcWT8aSIvU7cFY974p3S1gWQcP2IxrvebQLsEMUfMpZu8gI1-n0vBxzf2wA6LFjsUmZb20QazOJs23A4-LrtoOCOwDgAWnNIyV6/s1600/Big+Girl+Panties+Template.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHTFlTqVCA3Tgk_cU1PI53XqkXz15bpCxdUEMGgfllgjcWT8aSIvU7cFY974p3S1gWQcP2IxrvebQLsEMUfMpZu8gI1-n0vBxzf2wA6LFjsUmZb20QazOJs23A4-LrtoOCOwDgAWnNIyV6/s320/Big+Girl+Panties+Template.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hopefully you will be able to download them and print them out (I drew them on an A5 size sheet of paper originally) so you can make your own fun brooch for yourself or as a gift. If you do, I'd love to see them! You can post them on my <a href="https://www.facebook.com/DelicateSparkles.co.uk">Delicate Sparkles</a> FB page. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The possibilities are endless. Have fun! :oD</div>

My original plan was to bead the whole glass, then I thought maybe I'd bead part way up but I rather like it just the way it is. What do you think?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilsbQdLbDj4AaEA6sOchrmsBn8Z_plg_W-SZ4zZkTP1qC00OsDuvTOl8GJxKPN-hiiqIMd1uW26c0gPggG6_uS1c5X-lrrGm8f-k3W8LHg3BTyCg3rUQtytbhJu2I0S2doKTdIvGUBf8Pc/s1600/DSCF0301.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilsbQdLbDj4AaEA6sOchrmsBn8Z_plg_W-SZ4zZkTP1qC00OsDuvTOl8GJxKPN-hiiqIMd1uW26c0gPggG6_uS1c5X-lrrGm8f-k3W8LHg3BTyCg3rUQtytbhJu2I0S2doKTdIvGUBf8Pc/s320/DSCF0301.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
As you can see from this close-up, I attached 5 bezelled 4mm chatons around the top of the stem and joined them together with pearls to give them a bit of stability as they were 'rocking' from side to side when I touched them. I was unsure about whether I needed to add a row of crystals to the top as I have done underneath the chatons but decided to leave it plain until I've made the decision about the top of the glass. I might just leave it as it is and add a different row to the very top edge of the stem instead.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1ioME5hwR-ErH5UeSvE3CRyjjhJC32nD_oVsZnug46UcblyYRDmTnplcOw1fcRzFXfWaUwdEfLebWPyMEpSbfRfY7OVOjYnHp311A0wufiqV83CVsAG4V_5YNXsBpt61W83IxWytjJi5U/s1600/DSCF0300.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1ioME5hwR-ErH5UeSvE3CRyjjhJC32nD_oVsZnug46UcblyYRDmTnplcOw1fcRzFXfWaUwdEfLebWPyMEpSbfRfY7OVOjYnHp311A0wufiqV83CVsAG4V_5YNXsBpt61W83IxWytjJi5U/s320/DSCF0300.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
So, what do you think? Am I finished, or not?<br />

<br />
I reached the edge of the base and was quite pleased with it. The beadwork sat nice and flat to the glass and the last row of beads just peeked out over the edge. Perfect. Until I tried to peyote off them, down around the rim. As I was beading I was pulling the thread tight to try and pull the beadwork in around the side of the base to 'capture' it in a sort of bezel. The sides taper inwards and I hoped that that would be enough to hold the work in place. No such luck! As I worked my way around, the bit I'd already done kept peeling off and wrinkling up. Despite trying to hold it in place with pegs while I worked I finally had to admit defeat and think of something else.<br />
<br />
After chatting to some friends I decided to try a kind of netting instead of the peyote and added 3-bead picots all around the edge. I connected the picots together and pulled the row in tight. This worked much better but it was still able to slip back off so I repeated the process to take the beads just over onto the underside of the base and finally worked a single row of peyote for stability. Success! :oD<br />

As you can see I also added some red seed beads to the edge, in two sizes depending on the size of the gap.<br />

<br />
I'd like to add more 'jewels' towards the edge but I don't want to overpower it so I'm unsure whether to do that or not. I will be adding some to the stem though and I'm hoping to get that done this morning. This afternoon we're off to Anfield so I won't get any done then.Donna Sandershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05488511836919526199noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3722520798364392839.post-22265406209277130802012-08-08T09:34:00.000+01:002012-08-08T09:37:01.420+01:00Jewels!The beads I needed to continue with my goblet arrived yesterday morning so I spent some more time on it, around another 7 hours or so, plus another hour this morning so that I'd got enough done to show you.<br />
<br />
I was so impatient to start adding some crystals that I figured out where I needed to place them almost as soon as they arrived. It took a couple of attempts to finally get them so I was happy with how they sat in the beadwork but once I'd figured it out, I added some golden glass pearls in the same way. This morning I decided it needed some smaller splashes of colour and settled on red seed beads to provide it. Adding them was actually more of a challenge as I had to work many rows in from the edge and still try to keep the beadwork flat to the base of the glass. Here is a pic of how it looks now:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxlS8dZcyE5-Jrhv87SdX3fCYtimQrDS1G6Bkq7YlCduRWiKYElhWjpD_T9hWjIBmgHcuZjXEM3CwEsRaLHuw6vpOAq4bDsYhiesamlJFoQshB3elXE4ALdbRrOD3P34JlHXG8JEyQ4f5k/s1600/DSCF0218.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxlS8dZcyE5-Jrhv87SdX3fCYtimQrDS1G6Bkq7YlCduRWiKYElhWjpD_T9hWjIBmgHcuZjXEM3CwEsRaLHuw6vpOAq4bDsYhiesamlJFoQshB3elXE4ALdbRrOD3P34JlHXG8JEyQ4f5k/s320/DSCF0218.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
If you look closely at this next pic you can see that there are very few increases in the beadwork. I've mostly been just adding extra beads per stitch as, not only does this make it easier to stitch, it also makes quite an interesting pattern.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqBWhBywVztsRww2tqPO3-vv2i1GustLT1spvpTqAzqcn57l23h8ki-P4yuLUOIpEYLaUmEch2Y7Oqtrj5EPHAK06piYx3By9lPe-L9-yTiqSYxYuckfIZcPE83r7ip8If1pHmoeAlWh8V/s1600/DSCF0219.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqBWhBywVztsRww2tqPO3-vv2i1GustLT1spvpTqAzqcn57l23h8ki-P4yuLUOIpEYLaUmEch2Y7Oqtrj5EPHAK06piYx3By9lPe-L9-yTiqSYxYuckfIZcPE83r7ip8If1pHmoeAlWh8V/s320/DSCF0219.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
You will also notice that where the pearls and crystals have been added, it has caused 'bends' in the straight lines out from the stem. At first this really bothered me but now I think it maybe adds interest. What do you think? As you can see I'm getting really close to the edge of the base now and this is making me slightly apprehensive as I'm not sure if I'll be able to get the beadwork to sit around the edge tightly enough to hold it in place. I'm debating whether to try and bead the underside too, or maybe just a small bit around the underside edge. It will have to be trial and error to decide it for me, I think. Then it'll be on to beading the bowl of the glass which will provide many more challenges, I'm sure! :o)Donna Sandershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05488511836919526199noreply@blogger.com11
